Taylor Swift Shuts Down A Sexist Magazine Story: ‘We Need Feminism In 2015′

on the mtv webpage, One of the most aggravating parts about being a woman of childbearing age — and yeah, I’m speaking from experience — is everyone from family members to people you barely know asking personal questions about when you may or may not be planning on having children. And for celebrities like Taylor Swift, this invasion of privacy extends (massively) to gossip columnists and magazines speculating that you might be literally expecting each time you eat a plate of ribs at a summer barbecue.
This must be incredibly irritating, so kudos to Tay-Swizzle for not allowing OK! Magazine to get away with a clickbait tweet making it seem like she was pregnant — when really, all she’d done was pose for a photo with a couple of fans who were expecting:
The “misleading headline” part speaks for itself, but the “choice of words in labeling me” part refers to the fact that the story literally introduces her as “Harry Styles’ ex-girlfriend” in its sub-headline and “Calvin Harris’ rumored girlfriend” after that.
Taylor’s feelings about this everyday misogyny were echoed two weeks ago by Ariana Grande, who wrote an inspiring Twitter essay saying that repeated stories that referred to her as Big Sean’s ex made her feel “tired of living in a world where women are mostly referred to as a man’s past, present, or future property/possession.”
Hopefully, if enough famous, powerful women keep calling this kind of behavior out, it will trickle down and have a positive affect on the rest of us. A girl can dream.
A real go-getter.
