In the wake of the Charleston, South Carolina church shooting, it’s been difficult to find words that properly express the grief we all feel. So when words won’t work, it’s perhaps best to simply remember the victims’ lives with sympathy.
That’s the tone Beyoncé struck when she posted a moving tribute video on Instagram that lets silence speak volumes.
The clip shows a black-and-white photo of the church as the victims of the nine people shot and killed in the massacre flash across the screen one-by-one: Rev. Clementa Pinckney, Rev. DePayne Middleton-Doctor, Cynthia Hurd, Susie Jackson, Ethel Lance, Tywanza Sanders, Myra Thompson, Rev Daniel Simmons Sr., and Rev. Sharonda Singleton.
Beyoncé captioned the simple but powerful video, “My heart is with the families, loved ones, and all of those affected by the senseless tragedy in Charleston. May they rest in peace.”
On Friday, 21-year-old Dylann Roof was charged with nine counts of murder in connection with the attack, which took place at the Emanual African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston on Wednesday (June 17).
